The Amazon Kindle Oasis 2019 comes with new warmer settings.
Kindle Oasis represents the pinnacle of Amazon prowess in term of building an e-book reader. It has a large and well-illuminated display, it comes with buttons to turn pages and it is immune to occasional splashes of water. So how do you make a Kindle that already has the best of both worlds (digital and printed) even better? Simply by adding a tinge of warmth to it.
Amazon earlier this year launched the 10th generation Kindle Oasis in India. The all-new Kindle Oasis is available in India in three variants. While the 8GB Wi-Fi variant is priced at Rs 21,999, the 32GB Wi-Fi variant is available for Rs 24,999 and the 32GB Wi-Fi and 4G variant of the device is priced at Rs 28,999 in India.
The new Kindle Oasis looks exactly like the 9th Generation of kindle Oasis that was launched back in 2017. It features the same screen size, the same controls and the same water resistant technology that was available in the old Kindle Oasis and if it wasn’t for the new Champagne Gold colour variant, you probably won’t be able to make out any differences between the old and the new Kindles either (both the devices are available in Graphite colour variant).
Aside from the colour, it is display that has got an update. Apart from an additional setting to adjust the screen warmth, the 10th generation Kindle Oasis has a screen that is more illuminated that provides a comfortable reading time under various reading conditions. What makes using the new Kindle Oasis even better is its long battery life that allows you to go without charging the device for weeks together. We will discuss about the battery life and other performance aspects of the new Kindle Oasis shortly, but first let’s talk about the design.
Do you remember the old Kindle Oasis? The one that was slightly raised on the side to give book lovers an authentic book-reading feel? Well, the new Kindle Oasis looks exactly the same. It comes with the same aluminum body, soft-touch glass screen and dimensions that are characteristic of the Amazon Kindle Oasis brand. And if you aren’t sure, the new Kindle Oasis is 6.3-inches tall and comes with a 5.6-inch screen that also houses the two page turn button. It is 0.13-inches thin on the slimmer side and 0.33-inches thick on the opposite end which has a power button on one end and a micro-USB port on the other — all of which is exactly similar to the old Kindle Oasis. There is also IPX8 technology that protects the Kindle Oasis from water up to 2m deep for 60 minutes. Simply said, the Kindle Oasis can take occasional splashes of water by the poolside or during the rain and come out unscathed every time.
The display, however, is a bit different. It is also the highlight of the new Kindle Oasis. While both, the 9th generation Kindle Oasis and the 10th generation Kindle Oasis come with a 7-inch display with a screen resolution of 300 ppi, the new Kindle Oasis comes with built-in front light with 25 LEDs illuminating the display. On the contrary, the old Kindle Oasis comes with a built-in light with 12 LEDs lighting the screen. So how does this make a difference? It’s really simple. More LEDs under the display means a brighter screen, which in turn makes up for a more comfortable reading experience even in the times when you are out on a hike and it’s pitch dark outside. In addition to that it screen design reduces strain to the eyes and ensures that the screen is crisp and readable even the screen brightness is set to zero.
The Kindle Oasis represents the best of what Kindle has to offer. It is also the fanciest e-book reader that you can buy in India (and elsewhere). It comes with all the Kindle-y features that you can think of. The buttons on the side of the display allow users to turn pages forward and backward. But if you are not a fan of that order, you can change the setting to work backward and forward. And if you don’t want to use the buttons, you can either swipe or tap on the screen to turn pages – which is a standard feature in all Kindle devices.
Talking about turning pages, the new Kindle Oasis a new e-Ink technology that makes turning pages seem a lot smoother and more natural.
And for the times when you want to look up for some information on the internet, there is an experimental browser that you can use to surf the internet. The best part about it is that you can access Google search right on your Amazon Kindle Oasis. Admittedly, experience is not as picture perfect as you would see on your smartphone or tablet but then that’s the entire point. Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader meant for reading books and perhaps looking for content pertaining to books and the authors online. Amazon doesn’t want the Kindle to be used as a regular tablet. This is perhaps the reason why Amazon introduces gradual meaningful changes to its Kindles that are relevant to the device. That is probably the reason why the biggest and most significant change that Amazon brought to its new Kindle Oasis is that pertaining to the warmth settings.
Kindles come with loads of features that make reading an e-book, even for hardbound book lovers like me, a pleasurable experience. And one of the most admirable qualities of these e-book readers is their exceptionally long battery life. The new Kindle Oasis is no exception to this rule. It comes with a long battery life that will support you for weeks together. Amazon says that the new Kindle offers up to six weeks of battery life. But that of course depends on your usage.
During my time with the new Kindle Oasis, the battery depletes roughly five per cent on using the new Kindle Oasis for about 1-1.5 hours on optimum settings (19 on brightness and 5 on warmth). With that of usage, the battery will easily last you for about three weeks.
Should you buy Amazon Kindle Oasis 2019?
In one word: Yes. The Amazon Kindle Oasis, as I said before, is the best Kindle in the market that money can buy. It comes with a well-lit display that is comfortable to read under all light conditions. It is immune to water and it has all the features that make Kindle the best e-book reader in the market. What adds to the overall allure is the new warmth setting that makes reading tad bit more comfortable.
That said, the new Kindle Oasis (like the old one) is tad bit pricey. The new Kindle PaperWhite that was launched in India last year for Rs 12,999 is a cheaper alternative that offers users almost all the features that the new Kindle Oasis does. It comes with a 6-inch screen and has ample storage space. What’s more interesting is that it comes with IPX8 technology that protects the new Kindle Oasis from water. True, it does not have warmth settings or the 25 LEDs lighting its screen but its screen is well lit and ideal for reading under all reading conditions.
Simple said, if you are tech lover then the new Kindle Oasis is the best e-book reader that you can buy. However, if you are still trying to settle with the idea of switching to e-books and are looking for a cheaper alternative to the Kindle Oasis then the new Kindle PaperWhite is definitely worth considering.
