Apple AirPods goes out of stock online; second-gen model expected in 2018
New Delhi: News of Apple AirPods going out of stock online as buyers scramble to purchase holiday gifts seem to hold weight with rumours of the Cupertino-based giant releasing an upgraded version of AirPods in the second half of 2018.
“Media reports over the past few days on brisk AirPods demand and Apple struggling to keep up with holiday season demand align with our findings and positive predictions on AirPods in several previous reports…” KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a research note, according to MacRumors.
Without revealing much on the second-gen AirPods, Kuo said one internal change will include a smaller quartz component and will continue to be assembled by Taiwanese manufacturer Inventec.
In addition, Apple will be releasing a new inductive AirPods charging case that will allow the earphones to be charged with the AirPower charging mat, scheduled to be launched in 2018.
The AirPower mat was introduced at the launch of the Apple iPhone X in Septemeber and will be able to simultaneously charge the Apple Watch Series 3, iPhone 8, iPhone X models apart from the AirPods inside its inductive charging case.
Owing to the holiday demand, Kuo said that Apple’s suppliers are unable to meet current demand, and explains why the earliest delivery date on them is mid-January. AirPods shipments will double in 2018 to 26-28 million units on a Y-o-Y basis, Kuo added.
